about

This version of O Gracious Light is from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, but these words (Phos Hilaron in Greek) make up the oldest known Christian hymn outside of the Biblical text that is still in use today. Did I know that when I put them to music? No. But they are rich lyrics, reminding ourselves at the end of the day (when we behold the "vesper light" -which means moonlight) that He is worthy to praised at all times. This song is purposefully tense. The words are saying "happy voices" but it is a song that aches.

lyrics

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing Thy praises, O God
we sing Thy praises, O God
we sing Thy praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Thou art worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices
O Son of God,
O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds
